On December 21, 1866, Fort Phil Kearny, now located in Wyoming, became the scene of one of the West’s most dramatic Indian Battles ever fought between U.S. Troops and Sioux Indians.   As this battle raged, those in the Fort listened to the gunfire and when it ceased, the outcome was unknown.  Unfortunately, by sunset it became tragically clear that all eighty one soldiers and civilians, under the command of William J. Fetterman, had lost their lives.
